The 2011 class of Boettcher Investigators was introduced to Colorado's Bioscience Community at the Colorado BioScience Association's Annual Awards Dinner celebration, December 8, in Denver. Timothy Schulz, Boettcher Foundation Executive Director, made the presentation, along with Ted White, chair of the Boettcher Foundation Board of Trustees.

The Webb-Waring Institute was founded in 1924 by Dr. Gerald B. Webb and later directed by Dr. James J. Waring. For over 80 years, the organization contributed to the advancement of biomedical research by engaging in basic and clinical research and training research scientists. In 2008, the Webb-Waring Institute became a part of the University of Colorado and is now known as the Webb-Waring Center. The Boettcher Foundation was entrusted with the stewardship of the Webb-Waring Foundation's assets. Through an innovative agreement between the Boettcher Foundation, the Webb-Waring Foundation and the University of Colorado, a new funding area was established at the Boettcher Foundation that will support the work of early-career investigators in the biomedical sciences in Colorado.

This program provides grants of between $200,000 and $300,000 to assist early-career investigators (ECIs) engaged in biomedical science research in Colorado. Today, the Boettcher Foundation Board of Trustees released the names of the five early-career scientists selected for the second class of Boettcher Investigators in the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Program. The announcement is made by Edward D. “Ted” White III, Chairman of the Boettcher Foundation Board of Trustees, who said "Our board is very pleased to embark on the second year of this important program, assisting early-career investigators in Colorado to continue their important research."

Launched last year, the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research program fills an unmet need in the state by assisting early-career investigators engaged in biomedical sciences to advance their research. Further, the program honors the tradition of Colorado's Webb and Waring families by investing in science that has the possibility of making significant contributions to human health.

Timothy W. Schultz, President and Executive Director of the Boettcher Foundation, said "Through this program, the Boettcher Foundation has been able to bring resources to an area where funds are currently lacking and where federal and private research programs provide limited support. Early-career investigators quite frequently have a difficult time securing a first opportunity at an independent research effort that will move them out of the laboratory of their mentors and onto their own new and exciting areas of discovery."

Aurora, Colo. (June 30, 2010)—A Colorado cancer researcher has received two grants totaling $280,000 to support his work in understanding the function of microRNAs in Ewing’s sarcoma.

Paul Jedlicka, MD, PhD, member of the University of Colorado Cancer Center Molecular Oncology Program and assistant professor of pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, is one of three University of Colorado scientists to be named inaugural Boettcher Investigators, an award that shares a $700,000 pool of grant money. The program supports early-career biomedical investigators working to make a direct impact on human health.

Jedlicka also received a two-year, $80,000 Young Investigator Award from the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer to continue work on microRNAs identified by his laboratory that may suppress Ewing’s sarcoma tumors. He’ll use the Boettcher Investigator funding to look at other sets of microRNA that may regulate the development of Ewing’s sarcoma."

The six investigators from Colorado institutions will receive between $200,000 and $300,000 each spread over the next three years to support their research efforts. "CU researchers picked for biomedical grant team"

"AURORA Two researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine have been named to a statewide biomedical research team that will draw on a three-year, $700,000 grant.

Gidon Felsen and Paul Jedlicka, both professors at the School of Medicine at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, were named as “Boettcher Investigators” June 30 as part of the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Awards Program. The joint effort between the Denver-based Boettcher Foundation, the Webb-Waring Foundation for Biomedical Research and the University of Colorado seeks to advance clinical research on cancer, Parkinson’s and other ailments. The program also seeks to reduce the amount of time that therapies to patients.

First Class of Boettcher Investigators Announced At Governor's Residence Ceremonies Today

The 2010 (Inaugural) Class of Boettcher Investigators in the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Program includes the following:

* Shaodong Dai, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Immunology, National Jewish Health, Chronic Beryllium Lung Disease

* Robin Dowell, D.Sc., Assistant Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, University of Colorado at Boulder, Translational Bioinformatics Involving Drug Efficacy and Genetics

* Gidon Felsen, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Colorado – Anschutz Medical Campus, Parkinson’s Disease

* Paul Jedlicka, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pathology, University of Colorado – Anschutz Medical Campus, Ewing Sarcoma, a Common Cancer of the Bone and Soft Tissue Affecting Children

* Keith Neeves, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, Role of Blood Flow in the Formation of Blood Clots

* Melissa Reynolds, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Colorado State University, Nitric-Oxide Releasing Materials for Cardiovascular Medical Devices

Individual grant amounts for these research projects range from $200,000 to $300,000. The grant amounts allocated varied based on funding available to the institution and size of project. Per program guidelines, the minimum budget was required to be $200,000.

“We’d announced the creation of the Program in 2008, as the result of an innovative agreement among the Boettcher Foundation, Webb-Waring Foundation for Biomedical Research and the University of Colorado,” Tim Schultz, Boettcher Foundation President and Executive Director, explains. “In the interim, we’ve worked long and hard with our State’s Universities, public officials, the Governor’s Office, and the bioscience industry in Colorado to understand the strategies in place and to identify the best opportunity for investment by the Foundation of more than $1 million each year into efforts to increase our competitiveness in biomedical science.”

The First Class of Boettcher Investigators will be announced today

Today is the big day - Boettcher Foundation is launching its Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Awards and the first class of six "Boettcher Investigators." Tim Schultz, President and Executive Director of the Boettcher Foundation, interviewed on 9News this morning with Gregg Moss about the new, innovative biomedical research program for the nation and Colorado.

Today's historic launch will be at the Governor's Residence (formerly the Boettcher family home)in Denver.

There are six Boettcher Investigators in the inaugural 2010 class -- three from CU and one each from National Jewish Health, CSU and the Colorado School of Mines. Areas of focus include: chronic beryllium lung disease, translational bioinformatics, Parkinson's disease, Ewing Sarcoma, formation of blood clots and releasing materials for cardiovascular medical devices. Each investigator and their work will be highlighted at launch activities today.

"The Webb-Waring Institute was founded by Dr. Gerald Bertram Webb and Dr. James J. Waring in 1924 as the Colorado Foundation for Research in Tuberculosis. For over 80 years, the organization has contributed to the advancement of biomedical research by engaging in basic and clinical research and training research scientists.

In 2008, the Boettcher Foundation was entrusted with the stewardship of the Webb-Waring Foundation's assets. Through an innovative agreement among the Boettcher Foundation, the Webb-Waring Institute and the University of Colorado, a new funding area was established at the Boettcher Foundation that will support the work of early-career investigators in the biomedical field."
